In 1999, the State of Wisconsin
Purchased almost 2,000 acres of lakes and land adjoing the southern
bay of Caldron Falls and named it Tommy G Thompson Centennial
Park. In late 2001, the state purchased almost 10,000 acres surrounding
Caldron Falls Flowage and 4 other lakes, sparing them from development.
The purchase will be the first state forest added in many years,
to be named Peshtigo River State Forest. They particularly wanted
Caldron Falls Flowage to remain undeveloped because of its many
natural wonders and ecologically important wild areas.
The flowage is a thriving fishery,
with class "A" muskie water with a very healthy population
of large northern pike, bass, walleye, and panfish. There is
tons of structure, and a healthy baitfish population to keep
growing the big ones.
There are hundreds of miles of
trout streams right in the area, the most in Wisconsin. Marinette
county also claims to be the waterfall capitol of Wisconsin,
with over a dozen major falls, and hundreds of small ones to
be discovered. There are great golf courses, miles of cross country
ski trails, thousands of acres of public lands, and the Nicolet
National Forest is right down the road. |
